Baby It's You, a new musical about Florence Greenberg, a real New Jersey housewife who started a successful record company and launched the girl group the Shirelles. Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Rajiv Joseph's new play revolving around the title animal, two American Marines, and an Iraqi gardener. Robin Williams stars and Moises Kaufman directs. The play premiered at the Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles in 2009, played the Mark Taper Forum in spring 2010, and was a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in drama. *Evita, a revival of the 1979 Andrew Lloyd Webber–Tim Rice musical. This production was a hit in London in 2006, and its star Elena Roger and pop star Ricky Martin will headline the Broadway transfer. Michael Grandage ("Red," "Frost/Nixon," "Hamlet" with Jude Law) will direct. Rob Ashford will do the choreography. Rehearsals begin in February 2012. Previews begin in March 2012. Once, a musical stage version of the 2006 film about a busker and an immigrant spending a week together in Dublin, Ireland. The book is by Enda Walsh, and the songs are by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. A four-week staged reading workshop at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., is planned for April. Picnic, a revival of William Inge's 1953 play about a Labor Day picnic in a small Midwestern town. David Cromer ("Our Town," "Brighton Beach Memoirs"), who staged an acclaimed 2008 production of the play at the Writers' Theatre in Chicago, directs. Porgy and Bess, an adaptation of the classic 1935 folk opera by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward that turns it into a musical, with a new book by Suzan-Lori Parks. Directed by Diane Paulus. Development workshop rehearsals begin April 13, with a presentation on April 21. A full LORT production is planned for summer/fall at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. Annie, a revival of the 1977 musical by Charles Strouse (music), Martin Charnin (lyrics), and Thomas Meehan (book), based on the comic strip character Little Orphan Annie. Producer Arielle Tepper Madover plans to open it on Broadway in the fall of 2012. James Lapine ("Into the Woods") has been announced as director.
Beauty, a new musical that uses the Grimm fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" as a jumping-off point. Regina Spektor will compose the music, and Tina Landau will direct and write the book. Target opening: 2011-12.
Berry Gordy Project, a musical based on the life of the Motown mogul. The New York Post reports that the show is in development and will employ Motown hits for the score.

Bring It On, a musical version of the 2000 movie about cheerleading squads at rival high schools. Lin-Manuel Miranda ("In the Heights") and Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") will compose the music. Dances With Wolves, a musical version of the 1986 novel by Michael Blake, which served as the basis for the Oscar-winning 1990 film. Producer Matt Murphy ("Memphis") has acquired the stage rights.
Death of a Salesman, a revival of Arthur Miller's classic 1949 play. The New York Post reports that Philip Seymour Hoffman is interested in playing Willy Loman and that Mike Nichols will direct. Target opening: 2011.
Death Takes a Holiday, a musical based on the 1929 play about the figure of death assuming human form and falling in love with a young woman. Maury Yeston is writing the score, and Thomas Meehan is reworking the late Peter Stone's book. Roundabout Theatre Company staged a workshop with Brian Stokes Mitchell in the lead.
Dumbo, a stage version of the 1941 animated film. The New York Post reports that Disney is in talks with directors to bring it to Broadway. No dates or creative team as of yet.
Enter Laughing: The Musical, a reworked revival of the 1976 musical "So Long, 174th Street," based on the play "Enter Laughing" by Joseph Stein, which was in turn based on Carl Reiner's memoir of the same name. This production was a hit Off-Broadway at the York Theatre Company during the 2008-09 season. Target opening: 2010-11.
A Few Good Men, a revival of Aaron Sorkin's 1989 play about a military trial. According to The New York Times, producer Ken Davenport and director David Esbjornson are seeking a star for the lead role. Target opening: 2010-11 season.
Finding Neverland, a musical based on the 2004 film about J.M. Barrie, the playwright who created Peter Pan. The book is by Allan Knee, author of the play upon which the film was based, and the score is by composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie ("Grey Gardens"). A reading was held in January 2009 with Christian Borle, Kate Baldwin, and Katie Holmes, directed by Rob Ashford. A reading of a later draft was held June 5, 2009, in Manhattan, also starring Christian Borle. Harvey Weinstein will produce.
The First Wives Club, a musical based on the 1996 film comedy, featuring a score by pop songwriters Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland and a book by Rupert Holmes. A pre-Broadway tryout directed by Francesca Zambello played San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in summer 2009. Zambello has since left the project and a new director is being sought. No dates or creative team have been announced.
Golden Boy, a revival of the 1964 musical based on Clifford Odets' play of the same name. The New York Post reports that Usher is in negotiations to play the lead.
The Great Game, a new play by D. Tucker Smith set in 1870. Described as a romantic adventure rife with danger, espionage, and unexpected love. Sheryl Kaller ("Next Fall") directs. Target opening: 2011-12 season.
Hazel, a new musical inspired by the character created by cartoonist Ted Key, with music by Ron Abel, lyrics by Chuck Steffan, and book by Lissa Levin. Target opening: 2011.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a revival of the 1998 Off-Broadway musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask about a transgender rock singer. Josephine, a musical based on the life of Josephine Baker, the African-American performer who became a star in Paris in the 1920s. The New York Times reports that Deborah Cox ("Aida") will star. The Normal Heart, a revival of Larry Kramer's 1985 play about the AIDS crisis. This production was presented as a one-night reading at the Walter Kerr Theatre in October 2010. The New York Times reports that producer Daryl Roth wants to bring it back as a full production in spring 2011. The reading was directed by Joel Grey and starred Joe Mantello, Glenn Close, Victor Garber, John Benjamin Hickey, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Patrick Wilson.
The Nutty Professor, a musical version of the 1963 film comedy starring Jerry Lewis as a nerdy academic who transforms into a swinging lounge lizard. Lewis will direct. Marvin Hamlisch ("A Chorus Line") is composing the music and Rupert Holmes ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood") is writing the book and lyrics. Target opening: 2010-11.
NEW On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a revised version of the 1965 musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane about ESP and reincarnation. A new version, with a revised script by Peter Parnell and direction by Michael Mayer, had a staged reading at Vassar College during the summer of 2010. It was announced that the production would open at Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre, but the New York Post reports that it will open on Broadway in the fall of 2011, possibly with Harry Connick Jr. in the lead.
Over Here!, a revival of the 1974 musical, set during World War II. Tony Stevens will direct and choreograph. Richard and Robert Sherman, who wrote the songs, and Will Holt, who wrote the book, are participating in revising the show.
Paradise Found, a new musical based on Joseph Roth's 1939 novel "The Tale of the 1,002nd Night," set in 1870s Vienna, with book by Richard Nelson, music by Johann Strauss II (as adapted by Jonathan Tunick), and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh. Harold Prince and Susan Stroman will co-direct. A production at London's Menier Chocolate Factory ran May 19–June 26, 2010, and featured Mandy Patinkin, John McMartin, Judy Kaye, Shuler Hensley, Kate Baldwin, and George Lee Andrews.
Pippin, a revival of the 1972 musical by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson about a medieval prince seeking fulfillment. Diane Paulus directs. A reading was held in November with Gavin Creel, Natalie Cortez, Jayne Houdyshell, Tracie Thoms, and the Montreal acrobatic troupe Les Sept Doigts. A New York workshop will be followed by a pre-Broadway run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., where Paulus is artistic director. Target Broadway opening: 2012-13 season.

Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, a reworked version of the 1978 musical "Ballroom." Jerome Kass, who wrote the original book based on his teleplay, is rewriting the book. Jerry Mitchell is director-choreographer. The score, by composer Billy Goldenberg and lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, will be augmented by new songs by Marvin Hamlisch. Seminar, a new play by Theresa Rebeck about four young writers and their belligerent coach. The New York Post reports that Alec Baldwin is interested in starring and that Scott Ellis will direct.
Sleepless in Seattle, a musical version of the 1993 romantic film comedy. Jeff Arch, co-author of the original screenplay, will write the book. Songwriter Leslie Bricusse has withdrawn from the project. He has been replaced by Michelle Citrin, Michael Garin, and Josh Nelson, who will collaborate on the score. Joel Zwick ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding") will direct.
A Star Is Born, a musical stage version of the 1954 film about a rising Hollywood actor and her alcoholic has-been husband. According to the New York Post, Kevin Spacey is in talks to play the male lead; Michael John LaChiusa is the musical supervisor and is adapting the screenplay. Jonathan Butterell directs. The score will feature the Harold Arlen–Ira Gershwin songs from the film. A workshop is planned for London's Old Vic Theatre.
Stories About McAlary, a new play by Nora Ephron about newspaper columnist Mike McAlary. Hugh Jackman, Sarah Paulson, and Richard Kind participated in a 2010 reading directed by Mike Nichols.
A Streetcar Named Desire, a revival of Tennessee Williams' classic 1947 drama. According to The New York Times, producer Stephen C. Byrd plans to mount a production with a multiracial cast for spring 2011.
Summer Stock, a stage version of the 1950 movie musical about a Connecticut farm owner who allows a show to try out in her barn. The book is by Sam Scalamoni and Jeffrey Haddow, with new songs by composer Thomas Tierney and lyricists Tierney and Haddow. Four songs from the movie will be used. An invited industry showcase was held Aug. 6 and 7, 2009, in Manhattan.
Sweet Bird of Youth, a revival of Tennessee Williams' 1959 play about an aging movie star and an ambitious hustler. James Franco told MTV news that he and Nicole Kidman will star. David Cromer will direct. Target opening: fall 2011.
Tales of the City, a musical based on Armistead Maupin's series of novels about San Francisco in the 1970s. Jeff Whitty ("Avenue Q") is writing the book, and the score will be by Jason Sellard and John Garden of the band Scissor Sisters. Jason Moore ("Avenue Q") directs. A reading was presented July 4–11, 2009, at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center as part of its Musical Theater Conference.
